Our health care system too often over-treats or under-treats us, either of which can be detrimental. I want to help patients optimize the quality of their medical care by helping them, as a coach and advocate, to navigate the complexity of the health care system and speak the jargon.
I served as an independent patient advocate for my mother, succeeding in motivating doctors to pursue a correct diagnosis after they thought they had ruled out all options, and were dismissing her symptoms. I coordinated her care, including communication among a half-dozen doctors, and managed 16 medications, supplemental oxygen, and interactions with hospice and others during her illness. I have a pre-medical education with BS degrees in Biological Science and Computer Science. I was a licensed medical technologist, working in hospitals, for ten years.
I want to bring this experience to bear for the benefit of others, offering whatever level or type of assistance is appropriate to the situation. I will not practice medicine but seek to fill the huge gap between doctors not having enough time to explain fully and patients having difficulty knowing what to ask. This should help the patient choose wisely among treatment options and execute well their own role as a more fully informed patient, resulting in the best possible medical and health care. |
